Today in class we went over the things that we learned in yesterdays slide. Yesterday we watched a first off we learned a little bit about socrates. Socrates was a philosopher and considered the father of western philosophy. When he was young he was a stonemason and also fought in the peloponisian war. Socrates always said " i could never teach anyone anything on make them think. We also went over how democracy relates to excellence. We(the class) said that when a country has a democracy it will be excellent. Take the untied states for example. We are a democracy and we are the best country in the world because we are so diverse and have our own options. We also learned about the death of socrates and his trial. Socrates was charged with "corrupting the youth" and "Not believing in the gods of the state. Socrates trial was in the public and there were five hundred jurors there. Socrates was found guilty and was put to death by poison hemlock. Next we learned about socratic method. This states "does the common sense of our day offer us the greatest potential for self understanding and human excellence." This states that the socratic method is just using common sense to understand ourselves and the life around us. Last but not least we learned about being and idiot in greek. The greek word idiot means to be a very self centered person and to not get involved in the community. It was considered dishonorable to not get involved in your community in greece. Socrates sums up his teaching with this " THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING!" This means that if you dont explore the word and try new things, whats the point of living.
