Yesterday we went over the definitions of the different types of  characteristic in a site. Some characteristics are water sources, topography, soil, and vegetation are just some of the characteristic. All of these things add up to make a site. Today we talked about situation which is the other part of our lesson. Situation is the location of place relative to other places around it. Situation helps use understand the importance of a place vs the places around it. We also talked about how humans can can an area depending on what they want in their site. These characteristics of sites are very important because it determines where people settle. For example Manhattan is twice as large now as it was in 1629. More people started to immigrate into the U.S. so the demand for more living space was very high. The people of Manhattan had no more space available so they created space. They did this by sinking ships and dumping garbage on the edges of Manhattan and then covering it with soil so that it could be a place where people lived. We also talked about how use creating  or adding to a site can be bad for some places. For example in Houston the ground is flat and there are tons of buildings and homes. Three hurricanes came through and flooded Houston. Because there are so many houses and buildings in Houston there is no where for the water to go so Houston cant drain the water that has flooded there town. All of these things lead back to site and situation and how it can be good but also sometimes bad.
